Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley
Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. Her aunt Denise inspired her love of art and creativity. Her aunt was a nurse and did night shifts to ensure that she could dedicate her time to art literature and theatre. She showed DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay discovered through her example that art can be an instrument for social activism. DuVernay's mother also had a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay to express herself by means of art. Although DuVernay was raised within Compton with her family, she was a summer resident living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summers and was later in awe of the idea to film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied in the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay developed an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. Her first job was working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to check the trash inside the house of a member of the jury. Her disappointment was evident in her journalism tasks and decided to switch over to the world of public relations. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior publicity assistant in a tiny film studio following her graduation from college. She started The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. Her agency launched numerous lifestyle and promotion networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
